Under the Skin

An alien wears a woman's face through the streets of Scotland, hunting men — until inhabiting a body starts to feel like something, and the film turns the male gaze inside out.

It never tells you what it feels — the face is a mask that withholds, so you have to build a soul out of behaviour and image alone. Your body stays on low alert throughout, spiking into dread and never allowed to settle, because the film is built against relief: the ending is abrupt and cold, and the valve never opens. What you carry out is not grief but dislocation, a residue that keeps surfacing for days with no way to explain it.

FAQ

Is it a science-fiction film?

Only by its premise. It never behaves like genre science fiction — no explanations, no world-building — it just drops you inside a non-human consciousness and lets image do everything language usually would.

There's so little dialogue — am I missing the plot?

No. The plot is deliberately thin so the experience can be everything. Stop chasing what it means and let the images do their work; the meaning arrives in your body, not your head.
