Spielberg trusts the historical record to do the work, filming in handheld black and white so it plays as witness rather than drama, and the restraint makes it land harder. The horror comes not from monsters but from ordinary men taking coffee before they kill, which installs a recognition you cannot shake. He grants a genuine release at the end and then immediately qualifies it with everyone the list could not reach, so you leave purged but not emptied, carrying it for days.
