Last Year at Marienbad

A man insists to a woman that they met and loved a year ago; she doesn't remember, or won't — and the film refuses to tell either of them, or you, what is real.

It works like a dream you can't wake from — rigid compositions, a looping voice, shadows that fall the wrong way — so the body registers a quiet wrongness long before the mind gives up trying to solve it. Nothing is confirmed and nothing is released; you leave under the strange weight of having stood inside a consciousness with no solid ground. Afterward it colonises your own memory, the white gown and the gravel garden surfacing for days as if you'd been there.

FAQ

What actually happens?

That's the one question the film will never answer. Whether they met, whether she consents, whether time is even moving — all of it is held open on purpose. You experience the uncertainty rather than resolve it.

Is it worth the confusion?

If you stop demanding a solution and let it wash over you, yes. It's less a puzzle to crack than a place to stand — one that quietly rearranges how you trust anything you see on screen.
