A jaded city photographer lets his unemployed country cousin stay in his flat for a winter, and the two men share the same rooms while remaining unreachably far apart.

Ceylan says almost everything through held shots and averted eyes, so the emotion arrives as the sound of two people failing to occupy the same space. The long static takes, the ambient cold, and the enforced stillness produce a low physical unease with no valve to open. The heaviness of two men who cannot reach each other settles slowly and simply stays — the film ends on one solitary figure, refuses to explain or console, and that image keeps returning in the days after.
